Hi @Sanjukta2,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the "incompatible black cartridge" error on your HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 3776.

Here are some steps you can follow to try to resolve this issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the printer and remove the black cartridge.
  • Reinstall the black cartridge, ensuring it’s seated correctly in its slot and clicks into place.
  • Check the cartridge for any protective tape or plastic that might have been left on.

2. Check Cartridge Contacts

  • Examine the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
  • If there’s any dirt or ink buildup, gently clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with water.
  • Allow the cartridge and contacts to dry before reinstalling.

3. Reset the Printer

  • With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back into the outlet and the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the error persists.

4. Try Replacing the Cartridges Again

  • Sometimes even new cartridges can be faulty. If possible, try using a different genuine HP 680 black cartridge to rule out a defect with the cartridge.

5. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. You can check for firmware updates via the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel.

6. Check Printer Settings

  • Make sure the printer is set to use the correct type of cartridge. In some cases, the printer settings may need to be manually adjusted for the ink cartridge you're using.

Hi Gaya,

Thank you for your reply.

However, my problem has not resolved even after trying all of the mentioned steps.

It is to be noted that after resetting the printer, initially it did not show cartridge imcompatible error. However, just after I printed 2 pages, it stopped printing from the 3rd page and again started showing "black cartridge incompatible" error. I tried resetting it again, however, it did not work the second time.

I tried another black cartridge (Genuine HP 680) but still having the same error. The printer firmware is updated and I have cleaned the heads as well. What should I do?

Thanks and regards
