Hi @Kudoshinichi

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That does seem like your black ink is draining faster than expected! Here are a few possible reasons and solutions:

Why Your Ink Might Be Running Out Quickly

Print Density & Quality Settings

  • If your printer is set to Best Quality or High DPI, it will use more ink per page.
  • Try switching to Draft Mode or Eco Mode in your printer settings to conserve ink.

Frequent Cleaning Cycles

  • HP printers sometimes perform automatic cleaning cycles, which use ink.
  • If you turn off your printer frequently, it may trigger more cleaning cycles when powered back on.

Ink Coverage Per Page

  • Ink cartridges are rated for 5% page coverage—meaning if your prints have large black areas or bold text, they will deplete faster.

Instant Ink Subscription Considerations

  • If you were previously enrolled in HP Instant Ink, some users report that cartridges behave differently after cancellation.

What You Can Do

Check Ink Usage Reports

  • Some HP printers allow you to check ink usage statistics in the HP Smart app or printer settings.

Use Grayscale Instead of Full Black

  • If printing non-essential documents, try setting the printer to Grayscale instead of Black Ink Only.

Good day Hawks_Eye im still observing my printer right now. I was away for a week and wasn't able to do your recommendation right away but as of now i used the printer and im still running out of ink and i adjussed the settings. Maybe i woud check it again before printing. Right now i put the printer on sleep mode so that i would not turn it on and off most of the time. By the way thank you for your help. I would reply again as soon i could get things right. Apppreciate everything.

@Kudoshinichi,

It sounds like you're being methodical in testing different settings to improve ink consumption—smart approach!

Keeping the printer in sleep mode instead of frequently powering it off could also help, as startup cycles sometimes use extra ink for calibration.

If you're still noticing excessive ink usage despite adjusting print settings, it might be worth checking:

  • Draft mode: Ensuring prints are set to draft or economy mode in the printer settings to reduce ink consumption.
  • Firmware updates: Sometimes, HP releases optimizations that adjust ink usage; you can check HP's firmware update page.
  • Cleaning printheads: If ink flow is inconsistent, running printhead maintenance might improve efficiency.

Glad to hear you're giving it time and tracking the results.

Let me know how it goes—I’m happy to help if you need more ideas! 🚀
