How do I either get it to work or get a new cartidge from HP, since I've paid for one...

Try these steps:
Check Cartridge Authenticity:
- Ensure that the HP 61 tri-color cartridge is genuine. You can check its authenticity by visiting HP Print Cartridge Anti-Counterfeit Information.
Verify Correct Installation:
- Open the cartridge access door and remove the tri-color cartridge.
- Reinsert the cartridge making sure it is properly seated in the slot. The connectors should align properly and the cartridge should snap into place.
Power Reset:
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
- Reinstall the tri-color cartridge.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Remove the tri-color cartridge again.
- Gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the cartridge slot with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- Reinsert the cartridge and check if the error persists.
