Hi @kobi123

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details and for already trying to resolve the issue by replacing the cartridges. I understand how frustrating it is when the printer fails to recognize new ink, especially when you’ve taken the time to install multiple replacements.

Let’s go through a focused set of steps to help restore functionality:

Steps to Resolve Ink Recognition Issues

Power Reset the Printer

  • With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on. This clears temporary memory and resets the ink system.

Clean Cartridge Contacts

  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on each cartridge.
  • Also clean the contacts inside the printer’s carriage.
  • Let everything dry completely before reinserting.

Install Cartridges One at a Time

  • Insert only one cartridge at a time, starting with black.
  • Close the lid and wait for the printer to initialize.
  • Repeat with each color cartridge.
  • This helps isolate which cartridge may be causing the error.

Check for Cartridge Compatibility

  • Confirm that the cartridges match the printer’s supported model. For example, if your printer uses HP 951XL cartridges, ensure they are not expired or third-party refills that may lack chip recognition.
  • If you’re unsure, refer to the printer’s supply list here:
HP Printer Cartridge - Ink & Toner for Printers.

Run HP App Diagnostics

  • Open the HP App on your Windows PC.
  • Select your printer → go to Printer Settings → choose Diagnose & Fix.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to detect ink system errors.

Update Firmware

  • Visit the printer’s support page:
HP Printer Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your printer model and install the latest firmware. This ensures the printer can properly communicate with newer cartridge chips.

If the printer continues to show “Printer Failure” or “Empty Ink Cartridge” even with new cartridges, it may be rejecting them due to chip incompatibility or internal ink system faults. The steps above will help confirm whether the issue is with the cartridges or the printer’s ink delivery system.
