Hi @NancyCPA,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

If your HP OfficeJet 4650 is not printing in color despite having a new color cartridge installed and the option to change from black and white to color is missing, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Verify Cartridge Installation

Power Off and On:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about a minute before plugging it back in and turning it on.

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Open the printer cover and ensure that the color cartridge is installed correctly and securely.
  • Remove the color cartridge and then reinstall it to ensure it is seated properly.

Step 2: Run Printer Diagnostics

Print a Test Page:

  • On the printer control panel, navigate to the Setup menu.
  • Select Printer Maintenance and then Print Quality Report.
  • Check if the test page prints in color.

Clean Print Heads:

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printheads.
  • Follow the prompts to clean the print heads. This can help if the nozzles are clogged.

Step 3: Check Printer Settings

Printer Preferences on Computer:

  • Open Devices and Printers (or Printers & Scanners in Settings) on your computer.
  • Right-click on the HP OfficeJet 4650 and select Printing Preferences.
  • Look for an option to print in color or black and white. Ensure it is set to Color.

Application-Specific Settings:

  • When printing from an application (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader), open the Print dialog.
  • Click on Printer Properties or Preferences.
  • Ensure the color printing option is selected.

Step 4: Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

Update Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for the HP OfficeJet 4650.
  • Install the updated drivers on your computer.

Reinstall Drivers:

  • If updating doesn’t help, uninstall the current printer drivers from your computer.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Reinstall the latest drivers from the HP Support website.

Hi @NancyCPA,

Below are the next set of steps.

Step 5: Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download and Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:
    • Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the HP Support website.
    • Run the tool to diagnose and fix any printing issues. Follow the prompts to resolve any detected problems.

Step 6: Check Ink Levels and Cartridge Authenticity

Check Ink Levels:

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Ink Levels to ensure there is sufficient color ink.

Verify Cartridge Authenticity:

  • Make sure you are using genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP cartridges or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause issues.

Step 7: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Perform a Hard Reset:
    • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
    • Wait for 60 seconds.
    • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and the wall outlet. Turn on the printer.

Step 8: Contact HP Support

  1. If the Issue Persists:
    • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem with the printer.
    • Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance or to arrange a repair or replacement if the printer is still under warranty.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
