I have a DeskJet 1000. Inexpensive printer but does still a nice job for my needs.  Today I went to print 2 5"x8" pictures on the same page.  Both pictures are identical.  They looked the same size on the printed page.  However, when I cut them to size, I noticed they did not cut to the same size.  One of the 2 was about 1/8 inch narrower than the other.  One was about 4-7/8"  wide while the other was 5" wide.  I tried moving them over a bit thinking that perhaps I had it too close to the left margin and it was getting cu off that way.  But that did not correct it.  How can 2 pictures be the same size on the same page but print 2 different sizes?

Welcome to the HP English Community --

I might be missing the point.

In general, if the input photos are the exact same size and aspect ratio, then printing those images on the same piece of paper at the selected size should result in both images printed at that (same) size.

The results depend on the application / software you are using.

HP Smart includes a way to "spread" a single image to match the selected size (crop) or to print that image at the original size (shrink to fit).  "Shrink to Fit" can result in larger and / or uneven margins / White borders.

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Simple Photo Print

HP Smart - Windows - Simple Photo Print - Selected Size

===================================================

Using HP Smart to print multiple images on one sheet of paper can produce unexpected results, particularly if the original images are not the same size and aspect ratio.

The algorithm does not allow you to shift the placement.

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Multiple Images on one sheet of paper

==============================================

What to do?

Perhaps try using Microsoft Print Pictures to print both images on the same paper at the same size.

Thanks Dragon.  I will look into it.  I've printed this way before without an issue.  In fact I printed these exact same pictures a couple of years ago and had no size problem.  My other idea is the weight of the card stock I am using.  Can that affect it?  It is the same stock I used last time but all printed ok.

You are welcome.

Your device's Operating System / version impacts which applications / software are available.

That said, the OS and printing app you are using should -- in general -- work as it has in the past.

That just means that "same job" configuration setups that work one time should not produce different results the next time.

No, paper type / weight should not be causing the irregularity in print size between one image and another on the same sheet of paper.  Once selected and accepted for the current job, paper type / weight does not impact image print size variances.

What to do?

Restart the components -- printer, device (computer, tablet, phone).

Possibly, if relevant to your setup and if you willing to do so, also Restart your router.

What else?

Try a Power Reset on the printer - Reset steps are usually outlined in the troubleshooting document for "Jams".

Open the Home / Product Page for your printer model -

 Product Home - Printers

 Enter the device type and model name of your HP product

Next

Open Category Troubleshooting > Printing > Jams

Find and open the document (or video) for clearing "Jams" on your printer.

Find the step that describes how to power set / Reset the printer.

What else?

Perhaps try reloading (uninstall / reinstall) the application / software.

For Windows, this might include reinstalling the Full Driver Printer Software.

Also related to Windows:

If not done, check / run Windows Updates -- pending updates can interfere with printing results.
