HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

My printer wont shut off. It circles on screen and says "shutting down". I tried unplugging from wall. After plugging in again, the same message appears. I just changed all the cartridges too.

Reset the printer

  • Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.
  • If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.
  • Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and the printer.
  • Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Let me know how it goes.

Printer ended up shutting down with your instructions. Thanks. Now I get an error message 0x6100004a. HP Support said printer is out of warranty and tried to sell me a new one. Printer printed ok until I put new cartridges in. Seems strange. It scans fine. Just won’t print.

Hi @GSte ,

Since you got the error message, Let's perform a semi-full reset and see if that helps.

The reset instructions are specific to your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instructions to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
