Hi @PhylBG,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your printer is producing poor print quality, particularly with black ink not printing correctly, here are several troubleshooting steps you can follow:
1. Check Ink Levels
- Ensure that the black ink cartridge is not empty or low. Replace it if necessary.
2. Clean the Print Heads
- Most printers have a utility for cleaning the print heads. This can usually be accessed through the printer’s control panel or printer software on your computer.
- Windows:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences or Properties.
- Look for a maintenance or cleaning option and run the print head cleaning utility.
- macOS:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer and click Options & Supplies.
- Look for a maintenance or cleaning option and run the print head cleaning utility.
- Windows:
3. Perform a Deep Cleaning
- If a standard cleaning doesn't help, perform a deep cleaning cycle. This option is usually found in the same maintenance section as the standard cleaning.
4. Print a Nozzle Check Pattern
- Print a nozzle check pattern to see if the nozzles are clogged. If there are gaps or missing lines in the pattern, run the cleaning cycle again.
5. Align the Print Heads
- Aligning the print heads can improve print quality. This can usually be done from the printer’s control panel or software on your computer.
6. Check Cartridge Installation
- Make sure the black ink cartridge is properly installed. Remove and reinsert it to ensure it is seated correctly.
- Ensure the protective tape or plastic strip has been removed from the new cartridge.
7. Use Genuine Ink Cartridges
- Use genuine ink cartridges from the printer HP, as third-party or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause print quality issues.
8. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers
- Check the printer HP website for firmware updates and install the latest drivers for your printer model.
9. Check for Software Updates
- Ensure your printer’s software and your operating system are up to date.
10. Clean the Printer
- Open the printer and check for any paper debris or dust that might be affecting the print quality. Gently clean any visible ink buildup with a lint-free cloth.
11. Run Printer Diagnostics
- Many printers have a diagnostic tool that can identify and sometimes fix issues. Refer to your printer’s user manual for specific instructions.
12. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
13. Replace the Black Ink Cartridge
- If cleaning and other steps do not resolve the issue, the black ink cartridge may be defective. Try replacing it with a new one.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
