Welcome to the HP Community --

You can print using only black ink.

Unfortunately, it will not help.

What?

The printer hardware requires that all cartridges have ink and that all cartridges are functional (in working order).

How can I print in black only

HP Recommended

Hi @Boxall1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. We completely understand how inconvenient it is when you just need to print in black and your printer insists on having color ink available. The HP OfficeJet Pro 9019e uses a system called “Ink Backup Mode”, but there are some limitations.

Can You Print Black Only?

Yes, but only under certain conditions:

  • HP printers generally require all cartridges to be installed, even if some are empty.
  • If a color cartridge is empty, the printer may enter Ink Backup Mode, allowing you to print black-only text documents, but this does not always work for all file types or print settings.

Steps to Enable Black-Only Printing

  1. Check Ink Backup Mode
    • On the printer display, if you see a message like “Ink Backup Mode”, you can print black-only.
    • If not, the printer may block printing until all cartridges have ink.

  2. Set Print Preferences
    • From your PC:
      • Go to Printer PropertiesAdvanced → select Print in GrayscaleBlack Ink Only.
    • This forces the printer to use only black ink for text documents.

  3. HP Smart App
    • Unfortunately, the HP Smart app does not currently have an explicit Black Ink Only option.
    • If you print from mobile, choose Black & White and Draft Mode under More Options, which often reduces color usage.

  4. Replace Empty Cartridge
    • If the printer does not allow printing at all, you will need to replace the empty yellow cartridge to resume normal operation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
