HP OfficeJet 6950 All-in-One Printer

By accident 1 employee of the company has upgraded the Officejet 6950 printer to the latest firmware 2415BR, now because of that, it doesn't accept our ink anymore, and the printer doesn't want to print. So i am in desperate need to revert back to the older firmware that doesnt have this restriction anymore.

@Tao247,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

HP has been implementing firmware updates that block third-party ink cartridges, and unfortunately, downgrading the firmware is not always officially supported. However, you can try the following methods to revert to an older firmware version on your HP OfficeJet 6950.

Check if Downgrade is Possible via HP Update Utility

  • Sometimes, HP provides older firmware versions through its update tool.
  • Download and install the HP Printer Update Utility from HP’s official website.
  • If an older firmware version is available, it will allow you to install it.

Download an Older Firmware Version Manually

If the update utility doesn’t help, you need to find an older firmware file:

  • Search for the previous firmware version (e.g., 2023 or older versions) on third-party websites like:
    • hpdrivers.net
    • printerdrivers.com
  • Be cautious of unofficial sources to avoid malware.

Use a Manual Firmware Downgrade Method

Once you have the older firmware file (.rfu or .exe), follow these steps:

Put the printer in Service Mode (if available)

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Hold the power button and press back button (if applicable) 4 times.
  • Release the power button when the menu appears.
  • Navigate to Update Options > Disable Updates (if available).

Install the Older Firmware

  • Run the downloaded firmware file and follow on-screen instructions.
  • Some firmware files may need a USB connection instead of WiFi.

Restart the Printer

  • After installation, restart the printer and check if third-party ink works.

Disable Future Automatic Updates

To prevent the issue from happening again:

  • Go to Printer Settings > Printer Updates > Disable Automatic Updates
  • If connected to HP Smart, disable HP Cartridge Protection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
