Brand new 952 color ink cartridges from Office Depot are not compatible with my HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.

Got a message that "continuous ink cartridges" are not compatible.  Old cartridges say "Intended for single use only" on the cartridge label. New cartridges do not have that line.

Tried updating firmware, unplugging and plugging back in, resetting, switching from ethernet to WiFi.

Hi @Christz2024,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing a compatibility issue between your new ink cartridges and your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

Verify Cartridge Authenticity

  1. Check Packaging: Ensure the new cartridges are genuine HP products. Look for HP logos, security seals, and product numbers matching the original cartridges.
  2. Inspect Cartridges: Compare the new cartridges with the old ones to see if there are any noticeable differences in physical design or labeling.

Firmware Update Update the firmware on an HP printer

  1. Firmware Check: Even though you updated the firmware, ensure you have the latest version. Sometimes a manual check on the HP website provides the most recent firmware not automatically detected.
  2. Reinstall Firmware: Occasionally, reinstalling the firmware can resolve compatibility issues.

Printer Settings and Reset

  1. Factory Reset: Perform a factory reset on your printer. This can sometimes resolve compatibility issues.
    • Go to the printer's Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  2. Reinstall Printer Driver: Remove the current printer driver from your Mac and reinstall it.
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Remove the printer and then add it back using the latest drivers from HP’s website.

Cartridges Reinstallation

  1. Clean Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth to clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and the printer.
  2. Reinstall Cartridges: Reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they click into place correctly.

Printer Diagnostic Tools

  1. HP Smart App: Use the HP Smart app to run diagnostic tools and see if it provides more detailed error messages or solutions.
    • Download it from the HP Smart if you haven't already.

It sounds like HP wants me to pay extra (subscribe to instant ink program) to maybe get ink cartridges that will be recognized by my printer?
