HI, My issue is with an HP Office Jet 8022 wireless.  Last week, a new 910XL cartridge was installed and the printer was spitting out my P&L's. The day before yesterday there were no issues. I took yesterday off. Today when I tried to print the first P&L of the day, the report started, then about 2/3's of the way across the landscape oriented page the streaks started. By the end of the first (4 of 4) page, over half of the area was blank. On the next page (3 of 4), only about a 1/4 of the whole page actually printed. The next (1 & 2 of 4) didn't print at all.  I opened up the printer, pulled out the cartridge, checked it and the feed port hole, checked to see if there was a piece of strip that needed cleaning like the older models (couldn't find anything that would gum up) and closed it back up. I then checked the settings on the printer screen and the ink level shows 99% full. I'm only using black ink. I tried printing again, and am now only getting blank pages. My step mom tragically passed away and I'm trying to get my dad's taxes ready. We had to purchase a new computer, the copier is pretty new, so I don't think it should be breaking down.  When I was working, I was the fixer of the office equipment, even all the Optical stuff.  This has me stumped though.  Any suggestions??

Hi @JKLLM

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm truly sorry to hear about your loss, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything so clearly despite the circumstances. You've already done a thorough job checking the cartridge and internal components, and your background in equipment troubleshooting really shows.

Let's walk through a few focused steps to help get your HP OfficeJet 8022 printing again.

Here’s what I suggest trying next:

1. Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle from the Printer Menu
Even if the ink level shows 99%, dried ink or an air bubble can block flow.
On the printer touchscreen:

  • Tap Setup (gear icon)
  • Select Printer Maintenance
  • Choose Clean Printhead
  • After the first cycle, print a Print Quality Report
  • If the issue persists, repeat the cleaning up to two more times

2. Remove and Reseat the Black 910XL Cartridge

  • Power off the printer
  • Gently remove the black cartridge
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the carriage
  • Let it dry for a minute, then reinstall it firmly
  • Power the printer back on and try printing again

3. Check for Any Remaining Packaging Material
Even a small piece of protective tape or plastic can block ink flow. Please double-check that the orange pull tab and any sealing tape were fully removed from the cartridge.

4. Update the Printer Firmware
Outdated firmware can sometimes interfere with ink system performance.
You can update directly from the printer:

  • Tap Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer
    Or use your PC:
  • Visit HP OfficeJet 8022 Drivers
  • Download and install the latest firmware for your model

5. Use the HP App’s Diagnose & Fix Tool
Since you’re on a new Windows computer, install the HP App from the Microsoft Store if you haven’t already.

  • Open the HP App
  • Select your printer
  • Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings
  • Choose Diagnose & Fix and follow the prompts

6. Try a Print Quality Diagnostic Page
This helps confirm whether the issue is with the black ink only or if other colors are affected.

  • On the printer: Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report

If the black ink is still not printing after these steps, and the color cartridges are working fine, the issue may be isolated to the black cartridge or the printhead. If you have another 910XL black cartridge available, trying a different one could help confirm whether the cartridge is at fault.

Let me know how the cleaning and diagnostics go. I’ll be right here to guide you further if needed.

Dear Hawks_Eye,

OMG!!!! IT WORKED!!!!  Thank you SSOOOOO very much!!! The exclamation points are all well deserved. I really didn't want to go out and buy another printer on top of having to spend $$$$ on a new computer to get my dad's business running smoothly again.

I really appreciate the help, and know where to go if I get stuck again.

THANKS

You are very Welcome @JKLLM

That’s a fantastic outcome — I can feel the relief in your reply! You did exactly what a seasoned troubleshooter would: methodically checked the basics, then followed through with the printhead cleaning and reseating steps. It’s always satisfying when a stubborn issue like blank pages turns out to be solvable without replacing hardware.

What I especially like here is how you approached it with the same mindset you used in your office days — systematic, detail-oriented, and patient. That combination almost always pays off with printers, which can be temperamental when it comes to ink flow and contacts.

Since you’ve got it working again, a couple of quick tips to keep things smooth going forward:

  • Run a cleaning cycle periodically if you notice streaks or gaps, especially if the printer sits unused for a few days.
  • Print a test page once a week — it keeps the ink flowing and prevents clogs.
  • Store spare cartridges properly (upright, sealed, room temperature) so they’re ready when you need them.
  • Keep firmware updated — HP pushes fixes that can improve ink system reliability.

It’s great that you didn’t have to buy another printer, especially with everything else you’re managing right now. You’ve got the skills to keep this OfficeJet running strong.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. We're here to help!

Thanks again for your confirmation, and we wish you an amazing day ahead! 😊
