Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When my ink cartridges ran low, I replaced them all with new HP cartridges, but the Printer (OfficeJet 6960) only shows the color inks as full: the black cartridge  (HP 902 XL) is still showing as out. This is a Genuine HP cartridge.

Docs print in color, no black ink.

Hi @jsc5297,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet 6960 not recognizing the new black cartridge.

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure that the black cartridge is installed correctly. Remove it and reinstall it, making sure it clicks into place securely.

Inspect the Contacts:

  • Examine the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer. If they appear dirty or scratched, gently clean them with a lint-free cloth. Avoid touching the contacts with your fingers.

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 5 minutes. Then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the printer's recognition of the cartridges.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or the HP website.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a factory reset of your printer. This can help resolve recognition issues, but be aware that it will erase any customized settings:
    1. On the printer's control panel, go to Setup (the gear icon).
    2. Select Printer Maintenance.
    3. Choose Restore Factory Defaults.

Check for Blocked Ink Nozzles:

  • Run a print head cleaning from the printer settings. This can help clear any blockages in the black ink nozzle that might be causing recognition issues.

Test with a Different Cartridge:

  • If possible, try installing a different black cartridge to see if the printer recognizes it. This can help determine if the issue is with the cartridge itself.

Check for Software Issues:

  • Ensure that the printer drivers are correctly installed and up to date on your computer. You can reinstall them if necessary.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
