I've had the printer for years. Replaced the Tri-Color cartridge, now it only prints using the yellow ink.

Hi @MCC88,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP printer is only printing yellow after replacing the tri-color cartridge, even though it used to print normally. Let’s go through steps to troubleshoot this.

Check cartridge installation
Remove the tri-color cartridge and make sure it is seated firmly in the correct slot.
Reinstall it until it clicks into place.

Run the printer’s cleaning cycle
Even new cartridges can have partially clogged nozzles.
Use the printer control panel or HP Smart app > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead. You may need to run it 2–3 times.

Align cartridges
Go to Printer Maintenance > Align Cartridges.
This ensures the color inks print properly and in the right position.

Check print settings
When printing, ensure the document isn’t set to “Print in Black & White” or “Print Using Yellow Only”.
Also, verify paper type and quality match the printer’s recommended settings.

Test print with another document or app
Try printing from Word, PDF, or a web page to rule out software-specific issues.

Verify cartridge health
Open the HP Smart app or printer status display to confirm the printer recognizes the cartridge and shows sufficient color levels.
Sometimes a defective tri-color cartridge may only allow one ink (yellow) to print.

I hope this helps.
