@Gcummings49, Welcome to HP Support Community ,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It appears you're encountering issues with low ink and poor print quality on your new printer, resulting in streaking and faded ink. Here are some solutions to help resolve these problems:

Solution 1: Use Genuine HP Cartridges

Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges. Genuine HP cartridges are designed and tested with HP printers to provide optimal results. If you are using non-HP cartridges, you may experience quality issues.

Solution 2: Check Ink Levels

You should check the estimated ink levels on your printer. If the ink-level graphic shows low cartridges, replacing the cartridges can help improve print quality.

Solution 3: Print and Evaluate a Diagnostic Report

A diagnostic report can help identify print quality issues. To print a diagnostic report:

  1. Load regular, white, letter-size, or A4 paper.
  2. From the printer control panel, select Setup > Print Report > Print Quality.
  3. Evaluate the Print Quality Diagnostic Report for any defects such as ragged, irregularly streaked, or faded bars, or issues with large-font text alignment.

Solution 4: Clean the Printheads

Streaking and poor ink intensity can be caused by clogged printheads. Follow these steps to clean them:

  1. Load letter, A4, or legal-size unused plain white paper into the main input tray.
  2. From the printer control panel, select Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead.

Solution 5: Align the Printheads

If the test page alignment patterns appear crooked or if large-font text is jagged, align the printer:

  1. Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain white paper into the main input tray.
  2. From the printer control panel, select Setup > Tools > Align Printer.

Solution 6: Replace Problem Ink Cartridges

If cleaning and alignment did not resolve the issues, consider replacing the problem ink cartridges. Ensure you use HP-compatible cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Gary,

brand new printer 19 pages new HP cartridges because I am in the inkplan

do you see why all new stuff

the cartridges low at 19 pages what the heck??

I didn't note 600 dpi default

I changed to 300 that should save ink

and no smearing yet without cartridges changed

just didn't feel like what HP claims for this model, or it's a device or cartridges issue

when I change cartridges I will retry previously smeared print at 600 and 1200 dpi just to see what happens

Hey @Gcummings49,

Thank you for your response

It sounds like you’re frustrated with the performance of your new printer, especially given that you’re using new HP cartridges and are enrolled in the ink plan. The low ink issue after only 19 pages is definitely unusual.

Run Diagnostics: Start by printing a diagnostic report again, and check for any streaks or poor-quality areas. This can help pinpoint whether the problem is with the printhead or the cartridges themselves.

Test Different Resolutions: As you said, it’s a good idea to try printing at 600 and 1200 dpi again with fresh cartridges and see if the issue persists at those resolutions.

Run HP Smart:

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
