Hi @Slam0722

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy 4502 printer is not recognizing the new black ink cartridge, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Verify Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the black ink cartridge you purchased is compatible with your HP Envy 4502 printer. You can check the printer manual or visit the official HP website to confirm the compatibility of the cartridge.

Remove and Reinstall the Cartridge: Take out the black ink cartridge and reinstall it into the printer. Make sure it is securely and properly seated in the cartridge slot.

Clean Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, the metal contacts on the cartridge or inside the printer may get dirty. Turn off the printer and gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer with a lint-free cloth.

Update Firmware/Driver: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Visit the official HP website and check for any available firmware or driver updates for your printer model. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve cartridge recognition issues.

Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the printer and resolve cartridge recognition issues.

Check for Protective Tape: Ensure that there is no protective tape or plastic covering on the cartridge that you may have overlooked when installing it. This tape needs to be removed for the cartridge to function properly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-

Thank You Gaya1239 for responding. I had already read about and tried everything you wrote multiple times.  Others see the same problem with their HP printers. I'm using a brand new ink cartridge from HP!!! Bought the cartridge from the same place that sells the HP brand cartridges for many years. HP is doing this to us on purpose. They want everyone with a 7 year old printer to buy a new one. France made this illegal in their country for this very reason. There should never have been an encrypted key in the ink cartridge that can be turned off whenever the manufacturer wants.

Sad.
