HP Envy 5055
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Envy 5055 XL 65 cartridges (black) only print about 50-100 pages before it says it is empty and prints blank. I printed 150 with my last XL and had to go buy a new one. I just installed the cartridge. The status said new cartridge but showed mostly empty.  It printed 41 pages, and it started printing blank again and showed empty. I did not run the align page.I am printing in ink saver mode and draft..When I print status it prints again but also says the cartridge is empty. Is it defective HP cartridges or the printer?  These are supposed to be genuine HP cartridges, and the XL version bought from Staples. I can not afford my ink to be costing me 50c per typed page! The other issue I had been having is very long times for the print job to start, I have to cancel, and restart, and that is a problem with the printer itself. I had to reinstall the driver, and it still has issues. Powering off and on to reset it may also contribute to the ink use, but that much??

@swifter2, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand the ink runs out sooner than expected. There are a few things to prevent excess ink usage:

  • The printer should always be plugged into a live outlet.  If you use an external switch such as an outlet switch then more ink will be used at each startup.

  • Do not run cleaning cycles from the computer's toolbox or the printer's front panel.  These are rarely needed (perhaps once for each half dozen cartridges) and will use ink.

  • Printing in Draft mode may have acceptable quality while providing about 2x the pages of Normal or Best modes.

  • Check for any leaks from the ink cartridge.

If the issue persists with more than 1 ink cartridge, it could be an issue with the printer.

Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options for your printer.

If the issue is limited to only 1 ink cartridge, you may ask for a replacement from HP Support.

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.
