Have an Officejet Pro 8100. Has worked well for years. Got a out of ink message for magenta.  Bought new HP 951 3 pack. Put in new Magenta. Got Message that Cyan was low. Put in new Cyan.  Got a Ink Cartridge Failure Message for the Cyan. Reading recommendations did a hard reset several times, Cleaned contacts. Removed and reinstalled cartridges. Bought another new HP 951 3 pack from another retailer and installed those cartridges. Now have a Ink Cartridge Failure Message for Magenta and Cyan. In HP literature says cartridges for my region should be labeled z10. The old cartridges that worked but were just empty have z10 on them.  All of the new cartridges have no z designation from 2 different packages from 2 different retailers.

To check if an HP ink cartridge is genuine, look for a security label on the cartridge, scan the QR code on the label with your phone, and then go to HP's website hp.com/go/ok to verify the serial number on the label; if the label appears tampered or the serial number doesn't validate, the cartridge is likely not genuine.

Non HP ink can be used on this list of HP printers.

The below type is unlikely to work.

No holographic labels on packaging at all from both retailers. QR code on cartridge itself is just a string of numbers   So are Walmart and Staples known to be selling counterfeit ink cartridges?

Counterfeit is not the phrase I would have used in that HP website.

Ink is either OEM or Non-OEM

The corner piece image I posted earlier came from Walmart. Both companies sell both genuine and non-OEM ink.

The non-OEM ink can be cheaper and and works on printers that ignore non-OEM ink.

HP smart or the EWS app can identify toner or cartridges as genuine or not.  My cm1415 works with non-oem but photo quality is not as good as HP.  There is a problem with ink spillage on the refills.  Occasionally I have to clean the toner off before inserting.
