I have an HP Office Jet Pro 8020 and recently I’ve been having problems with the magenta ink not printing. I went and bought a brand new package of ink (910XL) and installed them. It still won’t print magenta and it says my ink levels are low and I should be prepared to replace. The ink is good til 2026 and I’ve tried cleaning the printhead, cleaning smear, realigning the printer and restarting it

Hi @Tbull2,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Use Genuine HP Ink Cartridges:
- Ensure you are using genuine HP 910XL ink cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality and reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges.
Check Ink Cartridges and Printhead:
- Verify that the magenta cartridge is correctly installed and that the protective tape has been fully removed.
- Check the ink levels using the printer’s control panel or HP software to confirm they are not empty.
Update Printer Firmware:
Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.
Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page:
- Load plain white paper into the input tray.
- On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the dashboard, touch the setup icon, swipe up on the display, touch Reports, and then touch Print Quality Report.
- Inspect the report for any issues with the magenta blocks.
I hope this helps.

I have tried all the suggested methods and still no change. I bought the ink packs in a 4-pack at Walmart and while the black works perfectly and reads at a full level, the colors are now saying low level (even after just being installed). Quite disappointing that it seems I will have to go buy another set of ink cartridges which may not even resolve the problem.
