Hi @jasmcg,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating this is, especially when you've done everything right with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710, and brand-new HP 952 cartridges still show as empty. You’ve already covered all the basics like resets, cleanings, and firmware updates, so let’s go a step further.

1. Confirm Cartridges Are Genuine and Region-Matched

Even if you’re using HP 952 cartridges:

  • Make sure they’re genuine HP (not remanufactured or compatible versions).
  • If the printer was purchased overseas, the cartridge region may not match (952 is for North America; others use 953, 954, etc.).

Check cartridge region:

  • Go to the printer control panel > Settings > Printer Maintenance > Reports > Print Status Report.
  • Look for the Cartridge Region Code and Current Ink Levels.

2. Check Cartridge Smart Chips

Each cartridge has a smart chip that communicates with the printer. Even new cartridges can have:

  • Misaligned or damaged chips
  • Poor contact with the printer sensor pins

🔧 What to do:

  • Remove the cartridges and inspect the chip (small copper/silver rectangle).
  • Gently clean it with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
  • Reinstall one cartridge at a time to isolate the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
