Hi @boop38

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m truly sorry you’re facing this right after installing a fresh cartridge—it can feel frustrating when the printer insists there’s no black ink even though you’ve just replaced it.

Thank you for already taking the step of inserting the new cartridge; let’s walk through a few detailed checks together to bring the printer back to life:

Step 1: Cartridge seating

  • Open the access door and gently press down on the black cartridge.
  • Remove it, then reinsert it firmly until you feel it click into place.
  • Close the door and check if the alert clears.

Step 2: Protective tape

  • Take the cartridge out again and inspect the copper-colored contacts and ink nozzles.
  • Make sure all protective tape or film has been completely removed—sometimes a tiny strip can block ink flow.

Step 3: Electrical contacts

  • With the printer powered off, lightly wipe the cartridge’s contacts and the matching contacts inside the carriage using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow them to dry fully before reinserting.

Step 4: Alignment and test

  • Power the printer back on.
  • From the printer’s control panel or the HP App on your Windows PC, run a cartridge alignment.
  • Then print a test page to see if black ink appears.

Step 5: Reset cycle

  • Keep the printer powered on.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.
  • Wait about 60 seconds, reconnect, and power back on.
  • Try printing again.

Step 6: Software check

  • Open the HP App on your Windows computer.
  • Go to the printer’s status screen and confirm whether the cartridge is detected.
  • If it still shows empty, remove and reinstall the cartridge once more while the printer is powered on.

These steps usually refresh the connection between the cartridge and the printer, clearing up detection errors. If after all this the printer still insists there’s no black ink, the issue is likely with the cartridge itself or the sensor inside the printer.
