HP ENVY 5010 All-in-One Printer

My HP Envy 5010 printer is now a few years old, but it's had occasional, light use. It recently stopped printing black ink; CMY is still printing fine. There are no errors or warnings, and the ink level is good. I have seen several posts with a similar problem, so I have tried fixes from those already. I have:

  • Replaced the cartridge (Instant Ink subscription, so genuine HP cartridge)
  • Run the clean cartridges, align cartridges and clean page smear tools multiple times
  • Rebooted the printer (including removal of the power cable and reinserting)
  • Checked for software and firmware versions—all up-to-date
  • Factory reset
  • Cleaned electrical contacts on cartridges and printer twice

I am running the latest versions of MacOS, iPadOS and iOS; the result of printing from all my devices is the same.

Is there anything else I can try?

Hi @Gafyn,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you've already tried several troubleshooting steps to address the issue of your HP Envy 5010 not printing black ink. Since you've covered many of the common solutions, let's explore a few additional steps you can take.

Check for Blocked Nozzles:

  • Sometimes, the nozzles on the printhead can get clogged. You can try to manually clean the printhead nozzles. To do this, remove the black ink cartridge and use a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the printhead nozzles. Be careful not to touch the copper-colored electrical contacts while cleaning.

Print a Diagnostic Report:

  • Most HP printers have a diagnostic or print quality report function. Use your printer's control panel to print a diagnostic report. This report may reveal more information about the issue. Look for any defects or missing black ink on the report.

Check for Ink System Issues:

  • Sometimes, ink system problems can cause black ink not to be printed. Go to your printer's settings or menu and look for an option to run an ink system test or diagnostic. This can help identify any issues with the ink delivery system.

Remember to only use genuine HP cartridges to ensure the best print quality and avoid any potential issues with ink compatibility. Also, be cautious when performing any DIY repairs, as you could accidentally damage your printer further.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,

Thank you for your reply. I cleaned the nozzle on the cartridge as described and printed the diagnostic report. There is still no black ink, so I could not read it.

I couldn't find anything related to the ink system in the printer menu or the web server UI on my Mac. Could it be called anything else?

Thanks, Gafyn
