HP 4650 will print color from a scan, but not from a photo on my computer (Windows 11). There is no option other than black or grayscale. I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything several times. This has happened before and fixed, but this time I can't fix it.

Hi @arbrus,
Thank you for your response
If your HP OfficeJet 4650 prints in color from a scan but only in black or grayscale from a photo on your computer, there may be an issue with the print settings. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix this problem:
Check Printer Settings:
- Open the Printers & Scanners settings on your Windows 11 computer.
- Select your HP OfficeJet 4650 printer and click Manage.
- Click on Printer Preferences.
- Ensure that the color option is selected. Sometimes, the default can be set to black and white or grayscale.
Check Print Settings in the Application:
- Open the photo you want to print in the application you are using (like Photos, Paint, or any photo viewer/editor).
- Go to the Print menu (usually found under File > Print).
- Click on Printer Properties or Preferences.
- Ensure that the color setting is not overridden by the application. Set to "Color" if it is set to grayscale or black & white.
Printer Software Update:
- Ensure your printer’s drivers and software are up to date. You can do this through Windows Update or by visiting the HP Support Software and Driver Downloads.
Reinstall the Printer:
- Uninstall the HP printer software.
- Restart your computer.
- Reinstall the HP software and drivers, ensuring they match your Windows 11 operating system.
Use HP App:
- Download and use the HP App which can provide more comprehensive printer management options, including correct color settings.

I followed all the instructions but was not able to download the HP App; apparently not available for the HP4650. I then tried to print the page of instructions, but the next screen had a box on top asking for a fax number. The same thing happened when I tried to print a Word file. Following that screen for the Word file, a notice: " Word cannot print due to a problem with the printer setup". I removed the Photos app from my computer because it wouldn't even display any of my pictures.
