Several months ago, I purchased a set of 4 non-HP ink cartridges (CMYK) from a vendor I've used for years.
I immediately installed the Cyan and Yellow cartridges, but did not need to replace the Magenta or Black cartridges at that time.
The printer acknowledges that the Cyan and Yellow are not HP cartridges, but with Cartridge Protection turned off, the printer functioned normally.
I just had to replace the Magenta cartridge and am now getting the message that this cartridge is "blocked by the printer firmware because they contain a non-HP chip. This printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip.
My firmware update is turned off, but it looks like the last update was built on 2/13/23.
How in the world can the printer see the Cyan and Yellow cartridges as OK, and the Magenta cartridge as BLOCKED when they came out of the same box?
HP, I know printer companies like you make your money on ink, but a move like this is corporate suicide. I'm sure I'm now a member of a very large group of consumers that will never buy an HP product again.
I can somewhat see where any newly bought printer has this HP-cartridge only requirement, as long as it is clearly displayed for the customer to see, so they know what they are buying. But to retroactively push this requirement on devices that were bought long before this requirement was established, on printers like mine, where some non-HP cartridges that were bought together work and some do not, is absolutely asinine.
It is clear that HP is more concerned with making a few pennies more per customer than keeping its integrity with that customer. This sounds like a perfect opportunity for someone to start a class-action suit if HP doesn't fix this issue.

The Officejet Pro 8710 is listed as a dynamic security enabled printer. When was your printer manufactured? The firmware update here (from April 2023) says the following (I added the
bold emphasis in the last part): [Edit - updated link for IOS 10.15 version of firmware download]
Reminder: Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which are used to block cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP electronic circuitry. The printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip or circuitry. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of the dynamic security measures and block cartridges that previously worked. More at: www.hp.com/learn/ds.
Note: For printers manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 dynamic security will not be enabled by this firmware. Please note that HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges.
If your printer was made before December 1, 2016 I would suggest you update to the latest firmware, available at the link above. If your printer was manufactured after this date I would suggest you contact your cartridge supplier for support.

Hi Bob,
Thank you for your response.
Unfortunately, I was already aware of everything you said, but the point I was trying to make, which you did not address, is that I've been using non-HP ink cartridges for almost a year. In fact, my printer is currently using a Cyan and a Yellow ink cartridge from a third-party supplier without issue. The printer recognizes them as non-HP cartridges and accepts them. I recently needed to replace the Magenta cartridge and I still had the unused Magenta and Black cartridges that came as a 4-cartridge set with the Cyan and Yellow cartridges that are already in use.
Now, after installing the Magenta cartridge, I get the "cartridge is blocked" message which never appeared before. So, when you say the "Officejet Pro 8710 is listed as a dynamic security enabled printer", I would have to say that my 8710 was NOT a "dynamic security enabled printer" until just recently since it did not reject the Cyan and Yellow cartridges that I have been using for over 6 months. It is clear that HP has done something (firmware, etc.) that breaks existing functionality.
I'm not sure if my printer was made before December 1, 2016. The warranty for my printer (serial number [Personal Information Removed]) started on August 13, 2017, and ended on September 11, 2018. Can you tell me how I can determine when the printer was made?
My current firmware is version WBP2CN2307AR, built on 2023-02-13. If I upgrade to the latest firmware, version 001.2307A, released on Apr 17, 2023, will the dynamic security be disabled?
Thank you.

[Please do not shoot the messenger.] The dynamic security page here says (bolding mine):
Firmware updates delivered periodically over the internet will maintain the effectiveness of the dynamic security measures. Updates can improve, enhance, or extend the printer’s functionality and features, protect against security threats, and serve other purposes, but these updates can also block cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP circuitry from working in the printer, including cartridges that work today.
Your printer has been updated recently. It is possible the latest (April 17,2023) update would "undo" the dynamic security, but only if your printer was manufactured before December 1, 2016. Based on the information you gave I cannot tell what the manufacture date was, it could be before or after the cutoff date. You could try the update, if you are lucky it would disable the dynamic security. In the worst case, it may impose added restrictions that would reject your other non-HP cartridges.
Alternatively, I can ask to have your case escalated. It is possible that an HP agent could check the date based on your printer's serial number.
