Hi, we just bought an ISY brand (non-HP) ink cartridge for our HP 6950 inkjet. The printer is refusing to print with a non-HP cartridge installed. I cannot believe that it's legal for you to do this, and I'm assuming this is a mistake.

How do I disable this function and continue using non-HP ink cartridges?  And please don't give me some tired excuse about protecting me from poor print quality or printer damage - I'll take my chances, thanks.

Thanks, the firmware seemed to be up to date already, but I'll try that again and see if it changes anything.

Appreciate the response.

Hmm, it appears that the firmware updates are potentially causing the problem, not solving it.

Could be -- the exceptions put in place by HP do check the manufacture date as reported by the printer.

An exception model must meet the date and any additional criteria.

My interpretation

The use of a non-HP cartridge is not supported -- the firmware, under the conditions stated in the document, is effective to remove any security measures that would block the use of the non-HP cartridge.  Lack of a firmware block does not insure you can use the cartridge when / if it fails.

Excerpted

If you see a Cartridge Problem error message when you are using non-HP cartridges, it is possible that a dynamic security feature has caused the printer to reject the non-HP cartridge. It is also possible that the cartridge has simply failed for other reasons.
This document applies to you ONLY if all three of the following conditions are true:
  • Your printer is in the table at the top of this document. Other HP printers are not affected.
  • You are using an aftermarket supply that contains a non-HP security chip (this may be a refilled or remanufactured HP cartridge with a non-HP chip). Only cartridges that lack HP’s security chip are affected.
  • Cartridge Problem error message displays. Other error messages are not related.

Hello LawnieJoe,

I have owned an HP LazerJet 200 colorMFP M276nw printer for a few years. I am satisfied with the print quality of the product even though I have always used Moustache compatible replacement cartridges.

Recently, I had to replace the cyan color cartridge. I used a compatible cartridge as usual and to my surprise, the printer tells me that the level is very low and it only prints black. However, the other three cartridges are also compatible models of the Moustache brand and the remaining toner content is indicated in %.

I searched the internet for a solution and came across the following article.

https://www.commentcamarche.net/informatique/peripheriques/27821-hp-bloque-les-cartouches-d-encre-co...

Reading this article made me furious, I felt like throwing the printer out the window. It is certain that if the company persists in this way and does not withdraw the obligation to use the original Toner cartridges, it will be the last HP printer that I will acquire and I am ready to bet that many other customers will do the same. Good luck to HP in recovering this lost customer base.
