HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

I just installed a brand new cartridge, purchased in a multi-pack from the same stock and store that I always purchase from. I've never had a problem with any of these genuine HP cartridges, until today. The printer is stating that the newly installed cartridge is an Older Generation Cartridge, and refuses to function with it installed. It's no older (or younger for that matter) than any of the recently installed cartridges. I've cleaned the connections. I've restarted the printer. I've checked and verified the firmware is up to date.

What is the expiration date on the newly replaced cartridge?

The latest printer firmware prevents from using expired ink cartridge(s).

I don't see an "expiration date." There is a "warranty ends" date. It is past that date, but the cartridges are fine. I purchased many before the pandemic because I was doing lots of printing. I've not needed to print much since March of 2020 due to COVID. Now I'm back to printing, and I still have lots and lots of these cartridges that I've never had a problem with before! If the problem is the newest firmware… How do I re-install old firmware until I use up these cartridges?

HP Recommended

If you want to use cartridges that have passed the warranty end date you will need to downgrade the firmware.

How do I downgrade the firmware? I can't find files online to install older firmware for Macs. Do you have a resource?

The information in the document here may help resolve the "Old Generation Cartridge" message.  HP made some changes to the cartridge and also made changes to the firmware to only accept the new cartridges for cartridges installed after the activation date for the firmware check.

If your cartridges have an end-of-warranty date prior to Jan 2021 or earlier you will likely need to replace the cartridges.  I would suggest you Contact HP Support for replacements.

I have been searching for some possible fix for this same issue for over 2 hours.  I replaced a black 952XL from a new two- pack that was purchased at Sam's and had never been opened today.  The cartridge I replaced which had been working but was low on ink had the same exact date as the replacement 05/2021.  It took me several installs, restarts, and unplugging before I started searching for this "Older Generation"warning. I have only owned HP printers for over 20 years.   I  have two HP computers, one for home and one for school, and this makes me want to get rid of them both!!    I buy the authentic, expensive HP ink and make sure that I have extra on hand when needed.    HP has removed the firmware downgrade link that would have allowed printers to use the cartridges as they have for years.  The new ink straight from the package is  now garbage, though it worked perfectly during the last year!  This is a horrible way to treat your customers that you obviously don't value.

I've had my printer for years. It still works fine, but is out of warranty. How do you suggest contacting HP Support for an out-of-warranty printer and a problem clearly created by HP themselves without having to pay the ridiculous support package charges? I have tried multiple approaches and have yet to find a path where HP doesn't require payment information prior to asking them to resolve the problem they caused. Unless someone can provide information as to how I can contact HP Support without having to pay extra for their issue; I am to the point of expecting HP to reach out to me if they wish to retain me, my relatives, my friends, and my clients as customers.
