HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

Just printing over 100 pages that were supposed to be in color. Had brand new ink cartridges and now they are about half full. It used the color ink, but printed everything in black and white. Any ideas to fix this issue?

Hi @Drew681 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is not printing in color despite having new color ink cartridges, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Check Printer Settings:

  • Ensure that the printer settings are configured to print in color. Go to the print settings on your computer and make sure the color option is selected.

Print a Test Page:

  • Print a test page directly from the printer to see if the issue is with the printer itself.
    • On the printer control panel, navigate to "Setup" or "Tools."
    • Look for an option to print a test page. This will help you determine if the color ink is working.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Ensure that your printer drivers are up-to-date. Visit the official HP website to download and install the latest drivers for your printer model.

Check Ink Levels:

  • Verify the ink levels on your printer. Some printers may have an ink level indicator on the control panel or through the printer software on your computer.

Clean Printheads:

  • Printheads may become clogged and affect color printing. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to clean the printheads. This may involve using the printer's built-in cleaning function or a special utility on your computer.

Align Printheads:

  • Perform a printhead alignment to ensure that the printheads are properly aligned. This can sometimes resolve color printing issues.

Check Color Settings on Computer:

  • Make sure that the application you are using to print (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat) is set to print in color. Check the print settings within the specific application.

Reinstall Printer Software:

  • Uninstall the printer software on your computer and reinstall it. This can help resolve any software-related issues that may be affecting color printing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
