HP envy 5530 (I do own but not at home to see it)

We recently replaced our black ink cartridge, but now it is saying the cartridge is not authentic. Nor is it recognizing the previous black ink cartridge that was empty as authentic. We have tried all of the reset options, hard resets and etc with no success. We have tried searching for updated drivers, cleaned the copper terminals. Please help with any other fixes!!

Hi @mc2222

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

It sounds like you're encountering an issue where your HP Envy 5530 is not recognizing your new black ink cartridge as authentic, even after a replacement. You've already tried some good troubleshooting steps, such as hard resets, cleaning the copper terminals, and searching for updated drivers. Let’s go over a few additional steps to help resolve this issue:

1. Ensure the Cartridge is Installed Correctly

Sometimes the issue can be as simple as the cartridge not being seated properly in the slot. Even if the cartridge looks like it's installed correctly, it’s worth removing it and reinstalling it to ensure it’s seated properly. Here’s how:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black ink cartridge and reinstall it, making sure it clicks into place.
  • Close the door and turn the printer back on.

2. Check the Cartridge’s Protective Tape

If you replaced the cartridge yourself, sometimes there’s still protective tape on the contacts of the new cartridge that needs to be removed. Double-check that the tape has been removed from the new black cartridge.

3. Use a Genuine HP Ink Cartridge

Your printer is designed to recognize and work best with genuine HP ink cartridges. If you’re using a third-party or refilled cartridge, it may not be recognized. HP printers sometimes display an “authenticity error” if the cartridge is not recognized as genuine, even if it appears to be physically compatible.

  • If you’re using a third-party cartridge, try switching back to a genuine HP cartridge to see if that resolves the issue.

4. Reset the Printer's Cartridge Recognition

Some HP printers have a feature that can reset the cartridge recognition settings. You can try the following:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power source for about 60 seconds.
  3. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  4. Reinsert the new cartridge and check to see if it’s recognized correctly.

5. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware may cause issues with cartridge recognition, especially if it’s not updated to handle newer cartridge models or to fix bugs. You can update the printer firmware by following these steps:

  1. Connect your printer to the Wi-Fi network (if it's not already connected).
  2. Open the HP Smart app or visit the HP Support website and search for HP Envy 5530.
  3. Look for firmware updates and follow the instructions to update the printer’s software.

6. Perform a Printer Reset (Factory Reset)

If the issue persists, a factory reset could be worth trying. This will reset the printer to its default settings, which might help clear out any configuration issues that are causing the ink cartridge error.

  • To factory reset your printer:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Press and hold the Cancel and Wireless buttons simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds until the printer resets.

Note: This will clear all Wi-Fi settings, so you may need to reconnect the printer to your network afterward.

I reset the reel, reset the internet on the printer and thought I had success because it said genuine HP cartridge recognized then got to test printing. As I went to click ok the incompatible cartridge error popped back up. I cycled through a factory reset of printer which did the exact same thing with started to recognize it then popped up with incompatible again.
