HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

The printer is not printing in color. I have just installed new cartridges for all 3 colors, even though the previous ones were unexpired and showed they had ink remaining. Even the test page from the printer settings comes out with only black ink. Firmware is up to date. Cartridges are official HP, non-refillable. I have cleaned the printhead multiple times. I have also attempted to align the printhead, but it has an error at the scanning stage and resets to default settings.

@oneseventy, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding OfficeJet 8020 Printing Issues!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP OfficeJet 8020 is not printing in color despite having new official HP cartridges and up-to-date firmware, consider the following steps:

Check for Ink Cartridge Issues

  1. Ensure Genuine HP Cartridges: Verify that the cartridges are genuine HP products, as issues can arise from using compatible or refilled cartridges.
  2. Inspect Cartridges: Open the printer and inspect each cartridge. Check if the cartridges are properly seated and ensure the orange pull tab and any protective materials have been removed. Use a pin or paper clip to clear the cartridge vent of any debris or adhesive residue.

Removing the ink cartridge

Clean the Printhead

  • Since you have already cleaned the printhead multiple times without success, consider allowing the printer to rest and retry later. Perform a manual check to ensure there is no obstruction or buildup on the printhead that might prevent color printing.

Check the Print Settings

  1. Verify Print Quality and Color Settings: Go to the application you are printing from, and ensure that color printing is enabled. The default print settings may inadvertently use black ink only or grayscale.
  2. Select Correct Paper Type: Choosing the correct paper type can impact the appearance of the print. Ensure that the selected paper type supports color printing.

Align the Printhead Again

  • Retry the alignment process: Aligning the printhead can sometimes require multiple attempts. If an error occurs at the scanning stage, ensure the alignment sheet is correctly placed and is free from any folds or creases

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi, I've tried all these solutions and still no luck 😞 Is there anything else I can do to try to get color printing to work again?
