Hello,
I have an old OfficeJet Pro 8600 printer. Today when I replaced the black ink (950 cartridge), I got an error message saying that there was a printer or ink error and to contact customer support. After doing some google searches, it seems it may be due to the newer black cartridges having a 'CN049AN' number rather than a 'CN049A' number? Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I tried updating all my drivers but that did not work. I also saw on an old thread that I may need to do a 'Regionalization Reset'?
Thank you,

Hi @latvianclimber,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
May I know if have you changed the region recently? Did you move to a new country and the printer you are using is from an old country?
The issue you're experiencing with your OfficeJet Pro 8600 not recognizing a new black ink cartridge can be frustrating, but it's a problem that can often be resolved with a few troubleshooting steps. The difference in model numbers (CN049AN vs. CN049A) you mentioned could indeed be at the root of the problem, as certain printers are sensitive to such variations, possibly due to region-specific settings or firmware differences. Here are several steps you can try to fix this issue:
Solution one: Use genuine HP cartridges:
- HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the issue. To check the authenticity of your cartridges, go to the HP anti-counterfeit webpage (in English).
Solution two: Check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any low or empty cartridges:
- On the printer control panel, touch the Ink Level Indicator icon.
- The control panel displays estimated ink levels.
- Turn on the printer.
- Place your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, and then pull to open the cartridge access door.
- The carriage moves to the left side of the printer.
- Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
- Push in on the front of the cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you to remove it from its slot.
- Remove the new cartridge from its package.
- Hold the new cartridge so that the cartridge contacts face the printer.
- Slide the new ink cartridge into its slot, and then gently push it forward until it snaps into place. Make sure the letter on the ink cartridge matches the letter on the slot.
Solution three: Use an automated tool to clean the printhead:
- Load plain white paper into the tray.
- On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup, and then touch the Setup icon (). The Setup menu displays.
Swipe the display to scroll to Tools, and then touch Tools.
Touch Clean Printhead. - On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup, and then touch the Setup icon
- The Setup menu displays.
Solution four: Replace the printhead
Solution five: Service the printer
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel - thank you. I am unable to test Solution #3, as the Printer Error message is covering the entire touchscreen and preventing me from performing any further operations. I do believe this is due to the new CN049AN cartridge, what can I do to get the printer to recognize it?
