HP Officejet J4680 All-in-One Printer

My OfficeJet J4680 new 60XL (new 901 cartridge replacement) cartridge shows incompatible cartridge when installed. Tried HP workaround but didn't work. Installed regular 60 cartridge with no problem to get up and running again. 60XL cartitridge fits perfectly as old 901XL and new standard 60 cartridge, Could it just be a defective cartridge? Could change to 60-series cartridge (from 901) affect new 60XL from making handshake with my machine? Any ideas?
