HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer

I purchased the 8020e in 2023 and was part of the Instant Ink subscription service. I wasn't using my printer as much to necessitate an active subscription, so I unenrolled in the service and replaced the Instant Ink cartridges with official non-Instant Ink HP cartidges 910 (MCY) and 910XL (K). Since installing the non-Instant Ink cartridges, after unsubscribing, the printer cannot boot up completely and is stuck on "Validating...Please Wait."

Can anyone please assist? I've attempted unplugging from power, and the screen does not present a menu or illuminated back button to factory reset.

Hi @notkeanu,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand your HP OfficeJet 5258 is not completing installation after reinstall attempts. Let’s go through a few checks.

I understand your printer not printing and needing further troubleshooting steps. Let’s go through a few checks.

Remove and Reinsert Ink Cartridges / Toners

  1. Turn the printer ON.
  2. Open the cartridge/toner access door.
  3. Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  4. Remove all ink cartridges or toners.
  5. Reinsert them firmly into their correct slots until they click.
  6. Close the access door and check if printing is restored.

Repeat Reseat and Perform Power Cycle

  1. Open the cartridge/toner access door again.
  2. Remove and reinsert all cartridges/toners once more.
  3. Turn the printer ON and disconnect the power cord from the rear.
  4. Unplug from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait 60 seconds.
  6. Plug directly into a wall outlet and turn the printer ON.
  7. Check if the printer recovers and prints.

Restore Factory Defaults and Re-setup

Refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Hi Kuroi, did you mean to address my issue with the HP OfficeJet 5258 and not my 8020e? That is a completely different printer. Are the triage steps the same?

Hi @notkeanu,

Thank you for getting back.

You’re absolutely right to point that out, and I sincerely apologize for the confusion earlier. That was a mix-up on my side while responding.

That said, the steps I shared (reseating cartridges, performing a power reset, etc.) do still apply to your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020e and are relevant for this type of issue.

If you’re still stuck on that screen after trying the steps, let me know:

  • Does the screen ever change or stay permanently on “Validating…”?
  • Any blinking lights or error codes?

I’ll guide you with the next exact steps based on that
