HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer

I keep getting the error message "There is a problem with the supply system. Try replacing the affected cartilage with a different one, non-empty, cartilage."

I have replaced the cartilage with two new ones without success.

I have also gone through all of the troubleshooting on the website.

Hi @KW142

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for already replacing the cartridges and going through the troubleshooting steps—that shows real dedication, and I truly appreciate the effort you've put in. I’m sorry you’re still facing this frustrating supply system error.

Let’s walk through a few precise steps to help clear it up and get your OfficeJet Pro 8720 back to smooth, vibrant printing.

Power Reset with Cartridge Removal

  • Turn on the printer if it’s not already on.
  • Open the cartridge access door and gently remove all cartridges.
  • With the cartridges out, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.
  • Once prompted, reinstall the cartridges one by one, ensuring each clicks firmly into place.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the cartridges again.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Let everything dry for 5–10 minutes before reinserting the cartridges and powering the printer back on.

Check for Protective Tape or Packaging

  • Double-check that all protective plastic tape or orange pull tabs have been completely removed from the new cartridges. Even a small piece left behind can trigger supply errors.

Update the Printer Firmware via the HP App

  • On your Windows PC, open the HP App.
  • Select your printer, then go to “Printer Settings” or “Advanced Settings.”
  • Look for a firmware update option and follow the prompts to install any available updates.
  • After updating, restart the printer and check if the error clears.

Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

  • On the printer’s control panel, swipe down to open the dashboard.
  • Tap the gear icon (Settings), then go to “Printer Maintenance” or “Printer Maintenance > Restore.”
  • Choose “Restore Factory Defaults.”
  • The printer will restart. After setup, reinstall the cartridges and check the display.

If the message still appears after these steps, it may be helpful to try a different set of cartridges—ideally from a different batch—just to rule out a rare compatibility or recognition issue.

Let’s keep the momentum going. If you notice any blinking lights or hear unusual sounds during these steps, feel free to describe them and we’ll fine-tune the next move together.
