Hi @Emily789,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-In-One Printer is indicating that it needs a new yellow HP 952XL ink cartridge but you believe it doesn't, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue.
- Check Ink Levels: First, verify the ink levels to ensure the printer's indication is accurate. Sometimes, printers can incorrectly report low ink levels. You can check this through the printer's display panel or by using the HP Smart app on your MacOS 12.0 Monterey.
- Reset the Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer can clear false error messages. To reset your printer, turn it off, unplug it for a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
- To restore the printer to the original network settings:
- Disconnect the power cord from the router.
- Turn off the printer.
- Turn off the mobile device/PC.
- Reconnect the power cord to the router, then wait for the Internet activity light to display a normal connected status.
- Turn on the printer.
- Turn on the mobile device/PC
- Clean the Cartridge and Contacts: Ink residue on the cartridge or the printer's contacts can cause detection issues. Remove the yellow HP 952XL cartridge and clean the contacts with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do the same for the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge connects.
- Firmware Update: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. HP regularly releases firmware updates that can resolve cartridge recognition issues. You can check for and install firmware updates through the HP Smart app or the printer's web interface. Click Here
- Reinstall the Cartridge: Remove the yellow cartridge and reinstall it, ensuring it's securely and correctly placed in its slot. Sometimes, reseating the cartridge can help the printer recognize it.
- Use Genuine HP Cartridges: If the cartridge is a non-HP or refilled cartridge, the printer might not recognize it correctly. HP printers are designed to work best with genuine HP cartridges. Consider replacing it with an authentic HP 952XL yellow cartridge if necessary.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
