HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP OfficeJet PRO 8028e and about 3 months ago it quit printing the blue ink. It will print red, pink, yellow, and black. Blue will not print in blue or even green. I have installed new HP cartridges though my subscription that is mailed to me when I am low and it still is not working. I have gone through the steps of aligning the printheads, cleaning them, doing the clean the smear and everything else it recommends and still nothing. Anyone else have this problem and if so what do I do? I have a business and it is very important that I am able to print in color. All Colors!

@StuckMomma, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand how critical it is to have all colors printing correctly, especially for business use. If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e is not printing blue ink (cyan) even after replacing cartridges and performing cleaning routines, here are some steps to help resolve the issue:

Confirm Cyan Cartridge is Genuine and Not Expired

  • Ensure the cyan cartridge is HP Instant Ink or HP Genuine.
  • If you have a spare cyan cartridge, try swapping it to rule out a defective unit.

Check Ink Levels and Cartridge Recognition

  • On the printer’s touchscreen:
    • Go to Settings > Ink Information.
    • Confirm that the cyan cartridge is recognized and shows sufficient ink.

Print a Diagnostic Page

  • On the printer:
    • Tap Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.
  • Look at the cyan blocks. If they’re missing or streaked, it confirms a printhead issue.

Run Printhead Cleaning (Multiple Times if Needed)

  • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning up to 3 times, waiting 5 minutes between each run.
  • After each cleaning, print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • On the printer: Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer
  • Or use HP Smart app on your PC:
    • Open HP Smart > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Tools > Firmware Update

Manually Clean the Printhead (If Out of Warranty)

If the issue persists and the printer is out of warranty, you can try manually cleaning the printhead:

  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Gently clean the printhead contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let it dry completely before reinserting cartridges.

Replace the Printhead (If Necessary)

If cyan still doesn’t print after all steps, the printhead may be clogged or failing. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
