HP Officejet 4632
I don't think I have ever been able to install a HP black ink cartridge since I purchased the new printer and put it down to faulty cartridges. I was only using the scanning function but now I've looked into it, I can see the problem.
The original ink cartridge that came with the printer (albeit empty) is marked as "incompatible cartridge", new identical cartridges are also showing as incompatible.
I have unplugged from the wall.
I have left the original cartridge in for 10 minutes and then tried the new ones again.
I have checked and unchecked the HP cartridge protection system (although it was off when I found it)
I haven't got the HP ink thing set up
I have updated all the firmware
I have done a factory reset on the printer at the menu
I have run through a full troubleshoot on the virtual assistant.
Just wondering if this is a dodgy printer, not dodgy as in counterfeit, but a well known problematic one and I should just elbow it?
Would love someone just to help me out so I can get it to accept the genuine ink cartridges?
Thank you.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,
If you see an Incompatible or Incompatible Cartridge message, follow these steps to see if you are eligible for replacement cartridges:
Go to HP Printer Support and enter your printer's serial number. For help finding your printer serial number, click one of the Tip links on the page.
Follow the instructions on the page to identify your Cyan and Yellow cartridges.
If you see the message You're eligible for a free replacement, either sign in or create a new HP account to provide your shipping information.
Until your replacement cartridges arrive, you can follow these steps to print in black and white mode:
Windows:
In your software application, click Print.
Select your printer from the list of available printers.
Click the option that opens the Printer Properties dialogue box.
Depending on your software application, this button might be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer Properties, Printer, or Preferences.
On the properties window, click the Paper/Quality or Features tab, depending on your software.
To print using only the black ink cartridge, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.
Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Black Ink Only.
Click the Black & White button.
Click OK, and then click Print to start the print job.
The printer prints the print job in black ink for this print job only. See Printing with Black Ink Only (Windows) to learn how to change the default setting for all prints.
Mac:
Open the document or photo you want to print, click File, click Print, and then click Show Details, if necessary.
Select Black & White on the main dialog. The Presets menu also includes black and white options.
To use less black ink, click Media & Quality in the unnamed print options menu at the center of the dialog, and then move the Quality slider to Draft.
Click Print.
To create a new preset based on the selected print settings, click the Presets menu, and then select Save Current Settings as Preset.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi there,
Its the 301 BLACK ink cartridge that is showing as incompatible, so the solution you provided did not help.
After logging in to HP Printer Support and inputting my printer serial number there were no instructions on the page for me to follow to identify the black ink (I thought I would take the initiative and follow instructions but using black cartridge instead of cyan and yellow).
However the black ink cartridge is clearly labelled near the cartridge trucks in the printer so I have the correct ink cartridge.
Can you still help?
Additionally my printer is out of warranty so I am only about the get the virtual assistant which wasn't helpful.
Thank you.
