Product: HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer

I have the correct ink cartridges for this printer, 62 black and Tri color. I have the xl versions but HP support says xl is compatable. However, every time I print the black in smudges. I have gone through all the recommended troubleshooting and it still smudges. I am out of color ink at the moment but that shouldn’t affect printing in black ink only. Can anyone please help with an answer. Thank you
