I purchased a hp 950XL black cartridge. After inserting it, the printer returns the "printer failure" message. I replaced the old empty cartridge and the printer recognizes it as an empty one. I did the reset and the printer has the most up to date firmware.

Hi,
I would assume you refer to an Officejet Pro 8600 printer and not 6800 as described, please confirm.
Please remove all ink cartridges, only insert one cartridge at time, close the door and evaluate the prompt, be sure to remove the cartridge and insert the next one while testing.
May the error return when inserting any specific ink cartridge which may failed?
Or may the error return only when inserting all 4 ink cartridges, regardless of the latest cartridge inserted?
This should allow verifying if the failure occur due a result of any specific ink cartridge, or the error may rely with the printhead itself, which indicate a printer failure.

I've done that and still receive the same message. I returned the cartridges thinking that they might be the problem. The new ones gave the same result. I decided to buy a printer from a different company. I think the problem is with the firmware recognizing the cartridge. The printer worked perfectly until the black cartridge ran out of ink. I bought the new replacement cartridges and it hasn't worked since.
