HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 which has been a brilliant printer since I purchased it. I recently ran out of ink and I needed to replace all 965 cartridges.

I went and purchased 3 new 965 Genuine HP Ink cartridges in Magenta, Cyan and Yellow and a new 965XL Genuine Black cartridge. I have never used non genuine before.

When I installed these new ones into the printer it came back with error message, "One or more cartridges are missing or damaged. Until cartridges are replaced make sure printer is turned on to avoid damage to printer"

I tried cleaning the microchip contacts with contact cleaner, tried unplugging the printer for a minute which didn't help either.

It just keeps coming back with the same error message. Please help!

Hi @Sobriquet71,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 E-All-In-One Printer - N911a cartridges issue. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove the USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-In-One Printer is displaying the message "One or more cartridges are missing or damaged," there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Check Cartridge Installation:

Make sure that all ink cartridges are properly installed in their respective slots. Ensure they are securely seated.

Verify Cartridge Status:

Use your printer's control panel or software to check the status of each cartridge. It should indicate whether any of them are empty or damaged.

Replace Damaged Cartridges:

If a cartridge is indeed damaged or empty, replace it with a new one. Make sure you use genuine HP cartridges for the best compatibility and performance.

Clean the Contacts:

Sometimes, poor electrical contact between the cartridge and the printer can trigger this error. Turn off the printer and carefully clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the corresponding slot in the printer with a lint-free cloth.

Restart the Printer:

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on.

Update Firmware:

Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can visit the HP support website to download and install any available firmware updates for your printer model.

Reset the Printer:

Some HP printers may benefit from a reset. You can find the specific instructions for resetting your printer in the user manual or on the HP support website.

Remember that using genuine HP ink cartridges and following proper maintenance practices can help prevent cartridge issues in the first place. Always follow the HP guidelines for your specific printer model.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
