I have an Officejet 8620  and am receiving a constant message: there is a problem with the printer or ink system.  I had  compatible cartridges in , but have since replaced them with genuine HP cartridges.  I have cleaned the printhead 3 times and I am still getting the message.  It will not allow me to go to the home page, I cannot navigate from this message?

Hi @sew4sd,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're describing with your HP OfficeJet 8620 printer suggests that the printer is detecting an error related to the ink system or printhead, even after replacing the cartridges with genuine HP ones. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Perform a Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug the power cord back into the outlet and the printer, then turn it on.
  • Check if the error persists.

Check the Cartridges

  • Ensure that the new cartridges are seated correctly.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door and inspect for any packaging materials or obstructions.
  • Remove the cartridges, clean the electrical contacts (gold-colored strips) on the cartridges and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their slots.

Perform a Manual Printhead Cleaning

Since you've already cleaned the printhead through the printer interface, consider removing and manually cleaning the printhead:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the cartridge access door and remove the cartridges.
  3. Lift the printhead latch and carefully remove the printhead.
  4. Clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and the corresponding contacts in the printer using a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Avoid touching the nozzles directly.
  5. Let the printhead air-dry for 10 minutes, then reinstall it.
  6. Reinsert the cartridges and close the latch.

Update Printer Firmware

  • If the printer is connected to WiFi, go to HP's website on your computer and download the latest firmware for the OfficeJet 8620.
  • Follow the instructions to install the firmware. (You may need to bypass the error temporarily to proceed with this step.)

Perform a Semi-Full Reset

A semi-full reset can clear certain errors, but it will reset all printer settings:

  1. With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the # and 3 buttons on the printer's keypad.
  3. While holding the buttons, reconnect the power cord and continue holding the buttons until the printer powers on.
  4. If this doesn't work, repeat the process with # and 6 instead.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
