HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I have an old HPENVY 5540 printer, about 6-7 years old, and it has stopped printing in black despite it having a full cartridge and registering said cartridge, it still prints color more or less fine. It's been finicky for years now and usually makes a loud grinding sound every once in a while when starting to print and pushing the paper out.

My question; Is it worth it to try to get it fixed, if it can even be fixed, or should I just give it up and buy a new one?

Hi @Roiya,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

 I'd like to help!

I understand you are unable to print in black.

To assist better-

1) Are you able to black and white copies?

2) What's the application you are trying to print from? Have you tried printing from a different application or device?

While you respond to that, let's print a Print Quality Diagnostic page -Post the Print Quality Diagnostic page here so we can help you further.

You may also refer to this document with steps to fix the " Print Quality Issues" issue applicable to your printer -  Print Quality Issues

Try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware Quality

Also, for grinding noise issues check for jams or broken parts in the printer, for instructions refer to Paper Jam Error

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
