HP OfficeJet 6958 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I installed a spare 902XL black cartridge in my OfficeJet 6958 and received the error "The indicated cartridge is an older generation cartridge that does not work in your printer."

The cartridge I installed is a genuine HP product and matches the cartridge I replaced exactly.  I also have replacement color cartridges purchased at the same time and I suspect they will have the same problem.  Have I spent $53 for nothing?  I would appreciate any assistance.

Check the warranty end date on a cartridge ( or cartridge box if you still have it). If the warranty ended you will not be able to use those cartridges.

Ok, thanks for the info.  So, HP has implemented planned obsolescence into ink cartridges.  I like the printer but it seems they've found a way to generate income and create a customer dissatisfaction hook at the same time.  I can't justify throwing away 4 perfectly sealed cartridges and spending another $53.   Looks like this printer goes into the recycle bin.  I'll have to think long and hard before another HP product is on my shopping list.  Maybe not.
