I received a notification today, after successfully printing a document, that my ink cartridge needed to be replaced. I did that with a "genuine HP" cartridges, and received an error that the 1 or more cartridges appear to be damaged and need to be replaced. I do not use instant ink. I have already tried re-seating the cartridges, cleaning the contacts on the cartridges, unplugging the power cord from both the printer and the wall, waiting the recommended 60 seconds and then plugging back in and still the error remains. I also tried downloading and installing the firmware updater, however, under status, it says that my printer is unavailable (presumably because the firmware is up to date). What else can I try?

Hi @Mary5241,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you’re receiving an error about damaged ink cartridges despite having replaced them with genuine HP cartridges, and you’ve already tried common troubleshooting steps, here are additional measures to address the issue:
1. Inspect and Clean the Cartridges
Check Cartridge Packaging:
- Ensure that no protective tape or packaging is still attached to the cartridges. Even small pieces of tape or packaging can cause issues.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and inside the printer where the cartridges are inserted. Let them dry completely before reinstalling.
2. Reinstall Cartridges
Remove Cartridges:
- Take out all the ink cartridges.
Check Cartridge Slots:
- Inspect the cartridge slots for any debris or obstruction. Clean gently if necessary.
Reinstall Cartridges:
- Reinsert the cartridges carefully, ensuring they click into place. Confirm they are installed correctly according to the printer’s manual.
3. Perform a Hard Reset
Turn Off and Unplug:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
Power On:
- Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and check if the error persists.
4. Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware
Check Firmware Updates:
- Since you mentioned the firmware is up-to-date, verify on the HP Support website if there are any newer firmware updates available.
Reinstall Firmware:
- Sometimes, reinstalling the current firmware can help resolve issues. If you can’t access the printer via the firmware updater tool, try downloading the firmware again from HP’s website and follow the installation instructions.
5. Try Different Cartridges
- If possible, try installing different genuine HP cartridges to determine if the issue is with the cartridges themselves.
- Ensure that the cartridges are the correct model for your printer and are not expired or damaged.
6. Check Printer Settings and Configuration
- Use any built-in diagnostic tools available on the printer’s control panel or through the HP Smart app to check for issues.
- Open the HP Smart app or printer software on your computer and check for any alerts or configuration issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
