HP DeskJet 4155e All-in-One Printer

I can only print jobs in color when printing through the HP Smart app. If I try to print a document outside the app through Pages, Google Docs, etc., it only gives the option to print in black in white. This is frustrating because you can only print up to 5 copies of something through the HP Smart app. I sometimes have to print the job multiple times to get the amount of copies I need. How can I get the color option to appear in regular programs?

Hi @agor0803,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the issue you're facing with your HP DeskJet 4155e is due to a default print setting outside of the HP Smart app. Here's how you can adjust your settings to enable color printing in other programs like Pages, Google Docs, etc..

For Mac OS:

  1. Open the document you want to print (e.g., in Pages or Google Docs).
  2. Go to File > Print (or press Command + P).
  3. In the print dialog box, look for an option called "Copies & Pages" or the name of the application (like "Google Docs").
  4. Click on the drop-down menu and select "Printer Features" or "Color Options" (the exact name may vary).
  5. Look for a setting called "Color Mode" and switch it from Monochrome (Black & White) to Color.
  6. Save these settings as a preset by clicking the "Presets" drop-down and selecting "Save Current Settings as Preset" for future use.
  7. Proceed with printing.

For Windows:

  1. Open the document you want to print.
  2. Press Ctrl + P or go to File > Print.
  3. In the print dialog box, select your HP DeskJet 4155e printer.
  4. Click on Printer Properties or Preferences.
  5. Navigate to the Paper/Quality tab or a similar option.
  6. Under Color, select "Color" instead of "Black & White".
  7. Apply these settings and click OK.

Additional Troubleshooting

  • Check Driver Settings: Make sure you have the latest HP drivers installed. You can do this via the HP website or the HP Smart app.
  • Default Printing Preferences: Go to System Preferences (Mac) or Control Panel (Windows) and find Printers & Scanners. Select your HP DeskJet 4155e, click on Preferences, and make sure the default settings are set to color.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Unfortunately this did not work. I tried all the options you suggested and it’s still only printing in black and white. It does not give me the option to choose to print in color.

Hi @agor0803,

Thank you for your response,

Let's try a few more troubleshooting steps.

Check Printer Preferences

  • Open Devices and Printers on your computer.
  • Right-click on your HP DeskJet 4155e printer and select Printing preferences.
  • Go to the Paper/Quality or Color tab and make sure Color is selected instead of Black & White or Grayscale.
  • Click Apply and OK.

Check Printer Driver Settings

  • Uninstall the current HP driver from your computer.
  • Visit the HP support site to download the latest full-feature software and drivers for your HP DeskJet 4155e.
  • After installing, restart your computer and try printing again.

Check Ink Cartridges

  • Ensure that both color and black ink cartridges have sufficient ink.
  • If the color cartridge is low or empty, the printer may default to black-and-white printing.
  • Try cleaning the printhead using the HP Smart app to ensure no clogs are affecting the color ink.

Reset the Printer

  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it's on.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall and wait about 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in, turn the printer on, and try printing again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
