HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479dw

My printer does not recognize original toner 415X chip. The message is: non HP chip detected.

How can I fox it. The catrridges look original, the safety holographic labels are OK. The only thing slightly off is how the chips are glued - it is not as pretty as in my previous smaller 415A cartridges. I am attaching the images.

Can anyone tell - are they genuine and what can be done about the error. I have updated firmware and I have tried turning on and off the printer.

Thank you!!!

Conclusion now is that the toners were counterfeit, I have notified the seller and he promissed a refund.

Hi @Hana2025,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You’ve indicated that your printer is showing the message: “Non-HP chip detected” and that although the cartridge appears genuine and carries HP’s holographic security label, the Cyan toner cartridge is not being accepted by the printer.

We recommend the following:

  1. Return the Cyan cartridge to the point of purchase, as the 2021 expiration may be the root cause of the chip error.
  2. Request a replacement with a genuine HP 415X Cyan cartridge, which is the correct high-yield model for your MFP M479dw printer.
  3. Once replaced, power cycle the printer and confirm whether the error clears.

💡 Note: Even genuine HP cartridges may be flagged if the chip is expired or was originally designed for a different HP model (e.g., 415A vs. 415X).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Vikram. My conclusion is that they are counterfeit and not expired. The problem is not with cyan only. The seller has promissed a refund.

Hi @Hana2025,

Based on the image you provided, we can confirm that all cartridges except the Cyan appear to be genuine HP cartridges. The Cyan cartridge, however, shows a few visual inconsistencies.

It’s great to hear that the seller has promised a refund.

Once the cartridges are replaced with a confirmed genuine HP 415X, we recommend reinstalling all cartridges and restarting the printer. This should clear the error message if the remaining supplies are authentic, as your image indicates.

Please go ahead and try the replacement and let us know the outcome — we're here to help if anything further comes up.

Take care and have a good day.

They are convincing fakes or refurbishments, making them difficult to spot. However, a careful inspection of the cartridges and also of the boxes reveals several inconsistencies.

It would be helpful if HP had more information on this topic, including detailed photos of genuine products for comparison.

Hi @Hana2025,

Thank you for bringing this up — you're right. With increasingly convincing counterfeit or refurbished cartridges in the market, it can be very difficult to tell genuine HP supplies apart from fakes.
