@babush,

I’m here to help you troubleshoot your issue and get things back on track. Just follow these steps below, and we’ll have you running smoothly in no time:

Why is the third-party cartridge blocked?

HP printers have built-in security features that are designed to prevent the use of non-HP or refilled cartridges. HP implements a system called "dynamic security", which prevents third-party cartridges from working with certain HP printers. The printer might display a message saying that the cartridge is blocked, which typically happens when the cartridge is not authentic HP.

While using non-HP cartridges may seem like a cost-effective option, it's important to note that it could void your warranty and may lead to suboptimal printing quality or issues with your printer in the future.

Steps to Try and Resolve the Issue:

Restart the Printer:

  • Power off the HP Envy 5530 printer.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Turn it back on and check if the issue persists.

Check for Software Updates:

  • Open the HP Printer Software (HP Smart App or HP DeskJet software).
  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware. HP occasionally releases updates that could resolve compatibility issues with third-party cartridges.

Reset the Printer's Cartridge Protection Settings:

  • Go to your printer's settings menu (on the printer's display panel).
  • Look for the "Cartridge Protection" setting.
  • Disable the option if it’s enabled. This setting prevents the use of non-HP cartridges.

Use HP’s Genuine Ink and Toner Cartridges:

  • If the printer does not accept third-party cartridges, consider switching to HP-branded ink. While the cost is higher, it ensures reliable printing, better quality, and fewer issues in the long run.

Manually Clean the Cartridge and Contacts:

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the non-HP cartridge and gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer using a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert the cartridge and try printing again.

Reset Printer to Factory Settings:

  • If you're still facing issues, you may need to reset your printer to its factory default settings. This might clear any settings causing the blockage.
  • To do this, go to the Settings menu on your printer and select Restore Defaults or Factory Reset.

Hi,

I have an HP Inkjet 9014e, and up until recently, I was able to use non-HP cartridges. Now, I get a message saying the printer has detected non-HP cartridges and will not proceed.

I spoke with HP Support, and they informed me that because I have HP+, the printer will not work with non-HP cartridges. This is quite frustrating as it removes my freedom of choice.

Is there a way to revert back so the printer accepts non-HP cartridges?
