Hi,

Have a decade's old HP OfficeJet Pro 8745.

Have been using non-HP inks for a little while and they worked.  Am now getting an advice that the chip is not HP and so it will not work.

May be a firmware change that has caused that.

How can I fix it please, so I can use the five non-HP cartridges I have now.

Appreciate any advice.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

Yes, it is possible a recent firmware update triggered the change.

Description

This software tool will help you update your printer to the latest firmware. Please refer to Enhancement/Fixes for more detail about the firmware update.Reminder: Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which are used to block cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP electronic circuitry. The printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip or circuitry. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of the dynamic security measures and block cartridges that previously worked. More at: www.hp.com/learn/ds.
Note: For printers manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 dynamic security will not be enabled by this firmware. Please note that HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges.

True - very nice printer - I had an OfficeJet Pro 8740, though it was not "decades" since - it was a favorite.

Not sure "going back" to HP ink (should that be an option for you) will work or not -- success depends on whether the ink system has been damaged.  What?  Sure - possible.
