Hi @Mickie53

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your printer is printing everything except for the black ink, there are a few potential causes that could be responsible. Let’s go through a few steps to troubleshoot this issue:

1. Check Ink Levels

  • Check the ink levels for the black ink cartridge. If it's low or empty, that could explain why black ink isn't printing.
  • You can check the ink levels using the HP Smart app or through the printer's LCD screen or computer software (HP Printer Assistant).

2. Remove and Reinstall the Black Ink Cartridge

Sometimes, the cartridge might not be seated properly or may have some contact issues.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black ink cartridge and check for any visible damage or issues (e.g., protective tape still on the cartridge).
  • Gently clean the contacts on both the ink cartridge and inside the printer using a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the black ink cartridge, ensuring it’s securely seated.

3. Clean the Printhead

If the printhead is clogged, the black ink may not be flowing properly.

  • Many HP printers have an option to clean the printhead through the settings or HP Smart app.
    • Go to your printer settings, select Tools, and look for a "clean printhead" or "clean ink cartridges" option.
  • Follow the instructions to perform a cleaning cycle and test the printing afterward.

4. Perform a Printhead Alignment

If the printhead is not aligned properly, it can cause issues with printing.

  • Most HP printers have an option to align the printhead through the printer settings.
  • After performing the alignment, try printing a document again to check if the black ink is working.

5. Run Printer Diagnostics

HP printers often have built-in diagnostic tools to detect and resolve printing issues:

  • HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free tool that can help diagnose and fix printing issues. You can download it from HP's support website.
  • It will guide you through troubleshooting steps like cleaning printheads and checking for other potential issues.

6. Check for Software or Driver Issues

If the issue only happens with specific applications or files, it could be a driver or software issue.

  • Ensure your printer drivers are up-to-date. You can update the drivers through the HP Smart app or visit the HP support website to download the latest drivers.

I hope this helps.
