I just installed new 910 xl cartridges at a cost of $137, and after printing 22 pages, the color cartridges are down to 20% remaining capacity and the black is down to 50%. The stated page yield is 825 pages per cartridge. What is wrong?

Thatnk you for all of this information. It's very helpful. I actually found a YouTube video, took the printer apart, pulled the printhead and cleaned it 6 ways to sunday, then put it all back together and it's working just fine. The printhead was so clogged that I saw a massive amount of ink sitting in the bottom of the unit underneath the cartridge carriage. That was a LOT to clean, but it beats a new printer. I inherited this printer from a colleague and should have known she wasn't keeping maintenance up based on how filthy the unit was when I got it. Also, it had to be shipped to me, so there were no cartridges installed, and that likely exacerbated the problem.

Hi @HolisticOne,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to assist you.
If your HP 910 XL cartridges are providing a much lower page yield than their stated capacity, there could be several reasons contributing to the issue. Let's troubleshoot:
1. Print Settings
- Print Density: If you’re printing high-density images or documents, this uses significantly more ink than standard text printing.
- Print Quality Settings: Printing in "Best" quality or with borderless settings consumes more ink.
- Paper Type: Glossy or premium paper can use more ink compared to plain paper.
2. Ink Usage During Setup
- Priming and Calibration: When new cartridges are installed, a portion of the ink is used for printhead priming and alignment. This can noticeably impact the yield of the first set of cartridges.
- Frequent Cleaning Cycles: If the printer performed cleaning cycles, this uses a considerable amount of ink.
3. Print Content
- The page yield is based on printing 5% coverage per page (a few paragraphs of text). Full-page photos or color-heavy graphics drastically reduce cartridge yield.
4. Cartridge or Printer Fault
- Defective cartridges: There may be an issue with the cartridge itself, causing excessive ink consumption.
- Firmware or printer malfunction: The printer may not be using the cartridges efficiently.
Steps to Resolve:
Perform a power drain:
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
Update the printer firmware:

Check Print Settings:
- Go to your printer’s settings and ensure you’re using "Draft" or "Normal" quality for less ink consumption.
- Use plain paper settings unless high-quality prints are necessary.
Inspect Print Content:
- Calculate the approximate ink usage based on the type of documents you're printing.
- Check the ink levels on both the printer control panel and the printer application:

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day
