After canceling my InstantInk subscription and buying original HP ink cartridges, the printer is printing with very poor quality after only a couple of pages. After running the cleaning process, it works again for another ~50 pages. I feel like being penalized by HP for canceling InstantInk.

Any similar experiences?

Hi @BM172,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

If your printer is experiencing poor print quality after canceling an Instant Ink subscription and installing original HP ink cartridges, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Check Ink Cartridges:

  • Ensure that you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. HP recommends using genuine ink cartridges to maintain print quality.
  • Verify that the ink levels are sufficient. Low ink levels can lead to poor print quality.

Check the Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure that the cartridges are properly installed. The orange tab should be removed, and the label on top of the cartridge should be slightly torn.
  • Reinstall the cartridge to make sure it is seated correctly in the printer.

Print a Print Quality Report:

  • Load plain white paper into the input tray.
  • On your printer control panel, press Setup, navigate to Tools, and select Print Quality Report. Review the report for any defects such as streaks or faded text.
  • If the ink levels show very low and print quality is unacceptable, consider replacing the cartridges.

Align the Printer:

  • Load plain white paper into the input tray.
  • Press Setup, navigate to Tools, and select Align Printer. This process will calibrate the printer to improve alignment and print quality.

Clean the Printhead:

  • From your printer control panel, go to Setup, then Tools, and select Clean Printhead.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to clean the printhead. This may need to be done a few times to see improvements.

Check Print Settings:

  • Make sure the print quality setting isn't too low for your print job. Use higher quality settings like Best or Maximum dpi for better results.
  • Check that the correct paper type is selected for your print job.

Inspect the Paper:

  • Ensure you are using the correct paper type for your print job. HP recommends using HP papers or other appropriate paper types.
  • Make sure the paper is flat and loaded correctly in the input tray.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello Pallipurath,

many thanks for your fast reply! Cleaning the head is helping but only for a couple of days. And my main concern is that each cleaning is eating into the very expensive ink. I had HP printers for many years, but now with your concept of InstantInk and fully remote monitoring and controlling of my printer, I don’t feel comfortable of what HP is doing in the background. It is clearly not the same behaviour and quality as before anymore. The printer still has warranty so, maybe I should return it and buy something else instead.
